I would love to create a 3D printed toy hover craft.. let me know if anyone is interested in collaborating on this project.
I've been meaning to post about this for a while, but wanted something to show rather than just post dreams.
Here's a short vine video (!LOUD!) (Apologies for the poor quality, its very hard to steer a hovercraft while taking a vine).
The hovercraft uses three of these motors along with these propellers. A 1200mAh lipo battery, a small charge board, and of course a BlueBrain. The BlueBrain is running the CannyBotRacer firmware, and the hovercraft is controlled by the Cannybot iOS app.
The skirt is a "Tesco small Zip Slide Food and Freezer bag" which seems to be nice strong plastic. To seal the skirt I placed the bag in between about 6 layers of aluminium foil, placed the hovercraft on top and traced around the edge with a soldering iron leaving a 1cm (or so) gap. Skirt it attached with double sided tape.
Have been very surprised at how well the hovercraft floats. I've had to increase it's size several times just to stop it hopping around like a rabbit because it's over filling the skirt and taking off. The skirt size, along with the placement and balancing of the components seems to be key. This still needs some work, as you can see from the video theres a slight tilt to the right. The battery, being the heaviest component seems to want to sit as close to the fan as possible. I've tried it in front of the fan and behind, along with different fan positions. The current layout has, if anything, the fan a bit too far forward.
Need to look at being able to PWM the speed of the lift fan (will be able to shrink the hovercrafts size down then) - Not sure about which GPIOs are suitable, and need to review how to reference them in the code. WIll also need to work on a new control app to implement.
That looks absolutely COOL.
@andrewholmes can you put some pics. Images of CAD model etc.
Please excuse the reply to myself, but heres a longer video
Much easier to record when someone else is piloting.
Great stuff @andrewholmes , awesome.
@andrewholmes - can you share the STL files for the hovercraft, there are some ppl asking for it!
